Congratulations to Guillermo Umpierrez, MD, GCRCs’ Emory University Hospital Midtown Site Director. Umpierrez is the recipient of the Endocrine Society’s 2021 Outstanding Scholarly Physician Award. This annual award recognizes outstanding contributions to the practice of clinical endocrinology in academic settings. He is a national and international leader in the field of hospital management of diabetes and has published several landmark papers and guidelines in the field of inpatient diabetes.

RADx-rad Predicting Viral-Associated Inflammatory Disease Severity in Children with Laboratory Diagnostics and Artificial Intelligence (PreVAIL kIds) (R61/R33 Clinical Trial Optional) – Due September 30

Per NOT-TR-20-034, NCATS is participating in RFA-OD-20-023. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) in response to the declared public health emergency issued by the Secretary, HHS, for the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). This emergency FOA provides an expedited funding mechanism as part of the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics-Radical (RADx-rad) initiative. This FOA seeks to support innovative research to develop novel, new or unique and non-traditional approaches (e.g. diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and/or biosignatures) to identify and characterize the spectrum of SARS CoV-2 associated illness, including the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and, through a prognostic algorithm, predict the longitudinal risk of disease severity after a child is exposed to and may be infected with SARS-CoV-2 to properly tailor his or her management and optimize health outcomes. ACLS Fellowship Program - Due September 30

This is an unrestricted funding opportunity and the foundation invites research proposals from scholars in all disciplines of the humanities and related social sciences. In the 2020-21 competition year the awards are designated solely for untenured scholars who have earned the PhD within the past eight years. ACLS welcomes applications from scholars without faculty appointments and scholars off the tenure track. The fellowship stipend is set at $60,000 for a 12-month fellowship. Projects that will be considered for Pfizer support will focus on improving the understanding of the safety and efficacy of growth hormone (GH) administered once daily in managing patients with short stature. Improving the understanding of the relationship between adherence and treatment outcomes. Increasing awareness of the emerging science of long-acting growth hormone to improve the understanding of their efficacy, safety, and potential clinical applicability. * Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) – Due October 1

BWF’s Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) is a highly competitive program that provides $700,000 over five years for physician-scientists (M.D., D.O., D.V.M., D.D.S.), who are committed to an academic career, to bridge advanced postdoctoral and fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. Competitive candidates for the CAMS award will have at least two years of research experience, be two years away from becoming an independent investigator, be a first author on at least one publication in a high impact top-tier journal and have a significant publication record. Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease-oriented, or translational research. Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are not eligible. BWF will make up to two additional awards to clinically trained psychiatrists who focus on research at the interface between neuroscience and psychiatry. These proposals must clearly demonstrate evidence of integration of neuroscience and psychiatry in project design. * The Whitehall Foundation Research & Grants-in-Aid Programs – Due October 1

The Whitehall Foundation is focused exclusively on assisting basic research in vertebrate (excluding clinical) and invertebrate neurobiology in the United States. Investigations should specifically concern neural mechanisms involved in sensory, motor, and other complex functions of the whole organism as these relate to behavior. The overall goal is to better understand behavioral output or brain mechanisms of behavior. Research grants normally range from $30,000 to $75,000 per year. Pfizer Optimal Early Therapy Management in CML – Due October 1

The aim of this proposal is to support three Quality Improvement (QI) projects that will enhance systems of care or implement new tools that will optimize early therapy management for patients with CML. Proposals should engage a multi-disciplinary team to identify and implement improvements in systems of care. Incorporate patient’s perspectives and participation in CML therapy management. Develop QI tools to support clinicians and patients in first 90 days of TKI treatment for patients and establish a plan for widely sharing best practices and QI tools that come from the project. RWJF Community Solutions for Health Equity - Due October 7

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Solutions for Health Equity program attempts to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on communities of color: by supporting communities to identify a problem that negatively affects consumers; envision solutions; and partner with health care systems to implement them. * Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery - 4 RPFs: Drug Development, Neuroimaging and CSF Biomarker Development, Prevention Beyond the Pipeline, Program to Accelerate Clinical Trials (PACT) – LOI Due October 9

The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) supports promising research projects from around the world to develop new drugs for Alzheimer's and related dementias, including vascular, Lewy body, and frontotemporal dementias. Four funding opportunities are currently open to researchers and clinicians worldwide. The goal is to accelerate the development of therapies through the following four core areas: Drug discovery, Clinical trials, Biomarkers, and Prevention. The ADDF is interested in novel therapeutic approaches, including small molecules, biologics, and gene therapies. Average awards range from $50,000 up to $3,000,000 based on stage and scope of research for each funding opportunity. Annual Postdoctoral Fellowship Award in Neuroscience – Due November 1

The Warren Alpert Distinguished Scholars program will support individual scientists of exceptional creativity who have an MD or PhD degree and have completed a minimum of three years of a post-doctoral fellowship by July 1, 2021 in the field of neurosciences and hold a post-doctoral research position at a United States medical school, research institute or academic hospital. The medical school, research institute or academic hospital appointing the scholar will be awarded $200,000 annually for two years to cover their salary, lab costs, and related expenses.

* Russell Sage Foundation Pipeline Grants Competition – Due November 4

Russell Sage Foundation has launched a new pipeline grants competition for early- and mid-career researchers in collaboration with the Economic Mobility and Opportunity program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Priority is given to research that improves our understanding of the severe consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, including its economic disruptions, and the mass protests to combat systemic racism and racial inequality in policing and other institutions. Tenure-track assistant professors can apply for grants of up to $30,000. Associate professors who have been in the rank for less than seven years can apply for grants of up to $50,000. Grants can be used for investigator salary, course buyouts, research assistance, data access, data collection, conference travel, and other research costs on a case by case basis. The Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC) announces the launch of the WHSC COVID-19 CENTER for URGENT RESEARCH ENGAGEMENT (COVID-19 CURE) and Awards Program, made possible by generous philanthropic support from the O. Wayne Rollins Foundation and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. The CURE Center was created to facilitate high-impact science and discovery towards improved COVID-19 treatment and prevention research. The funds can be used to support new COVID-19 focused researchers, equipment/instrumentation, technical support, pilots and enhancing facilities for this work. Georgia CTSA Announces Free Online Trainings for Clinical Research Professionals

The Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Alliance (Georgia CTSA) and the University of Southern California Clinical and Translational Science Institute (SC CTSI) are collaborating on an exciting new educational venture geared toward clinical research professionals at every stage of their professional development. We have created a new Online Course Catalog with free course and program offerings available to clinical research professionals. Participants earn a certificate or badge with contact hours (continuing education – CE) from an accredited provider upon completion of a course or a program (series of courses). Contact hours can be used to meet requirements for CRP certification renewal. Free, one-time registration to the Georgia CTSA Online Course Catalog is available to the first 400 registrants.

National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C)

The National Center for Data to Health and NCATS are leading the creation of a national, centralized, secure portal for COVID-19 clinical data. The cloud-based collaborative portal will allow for the development of machine learning and other informatics tools that require a large row-level dataset and will be overseen by a data access committee. This portal will provide additional assets needed to rapidly develop the analytics that clinical centers and physicians need now.

Case Study Reporting Tool Built by the FDA/NIH: CURE ID

CURE ID is an internet-based repository that lets the clinical community report novel uses of existing drugs for difficult-to-treat infectious diseases through a website, a smartphone or other mobile device. The platform enables the crowdsourcing of medical information from health care providers to guide potentially life-saving interventions and facilitate the development of new treatments for neglected diseases. CURE ID is a collaboration between the FDA and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Annual Workshop on Sex as a Biological Variable - December 2

In 2015, the NIH released a mandate requiring consideration of sex in all human subject and vertebrate animal research studies that utilize study subjects and/or materials (blood, tissues, cell lines) from them in order to strengthen research leading to the development, design, and testing of preventive and therapeutic interventions for both men and women.
