Novel Drug Shows Promising Efficacy for Patients With Multiple Myeloma

Results of an international clinical trial show potential for a novel drug to benefit patients with multiple myeloma whose disease recurred or was resistant to three or more earlier lines of treatment. “The MajesTEC-1 study update suggests patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma receiving teclistamab achieved a deep response that was also durable,” says the study’s PI at Winship, Ajay K. Nooka, MD, MPH, a Georgia CTSA investigator.

In light of the current Monkeypox outbreak, Emory SOM and Woodruff Health Sciences Center are collaborating on a special grant cycle. This RFP will support preliminary or proof-of-concept data in preparation for external funding related to Monkeypox. In Memoriam

"I feel like this is my home, my second home for me. I'm so passionate about working in this unit." Those are the thoughts shared by Dr. Vani Manoharan, DNP, MSN, RN, in a video when discussing her work at the Georgia Clinical Research Centers (GCRCs). It is with deep sadness and heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of our beloved nurse and friend. Dr. Manoharan passed away on August 6 at her home surrounded by family.

The National Institutes of Health will soon launch the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics Technology (RADx® Tech) for Maternal Health Challenge, a competition offering up to $8 million in cash prizes to accelerate the development of technologies to improve maternal health outcomes for those who live in areas lacking access to maternity care. The challenge will prioritize home-based or point-of-care diagnostic devices, wearables, and other remote sensing technologies to extend care and improve health outcomes during the postpartum period. The challenge will launch on September 1, 2022.

Phlebotomy 101 Training – August 25 & 26

GCRCs offer 13.8 contact hours for completing Phlebotomy 101 Training, an introductory training to venipuncture. The two-day classroom and clinical hands-on training teaches venipuncture. This course is offered to research coordinators and led by GCRC nurses. Open to Emory University, Emory Healthcare, and Georgia CTSA employees at MSM and UGA. The next training is on August 25 & 26. Free Online Trainings for Clinical Research Professionals

Georgia CTSA and the University of Southern California Clinical and Translational Science Institute (SC CTSI) have created an Online Course Catalog with a free course and program offerings available to clinical research professionals. Participants earn a certificate or badge with contact hours (continuing education – CE) from an accredited provider upon completion of a course or a program (series of courses). Contact hours can be used to meet requirements for CRP certification renewal. The newest program, “Innovation to Translation: Role of Genomics in Medical Product Development,” is now available online. I-Corps@NCATS Regional Short Course – Apply by October 3

Emory SOM Innovation Forum

Emory SOM is planning an innovation forum for the fall with the goal of creating a culture of open cross-pollination that could lead to exciting collaborations and innovations. The initial pilot forum will focus on the topic of medical devices and include speakers from Emory and Georgia Tech. Guest speakers from Emory SOM will present an unmet medical need and/or clinical challenge and a Georgia Tech speaker will share an emerging technology with the potential for clinical application.
