Georgia CTSA AI Regulation Blog Post: Strengths and Vulnerabilities of the European Union’s AI Act
In June 2024, the European Union implemented the EU AI Act, becoming the first to adopt a comprehensive AI framework based on ethical principles “to ensure better conditions for the development and use of this innovative technology”. But while the purpose is to advance AI innovation and safety, many question whether the Act’s requirements will prove more cumbersome and costly than they’re worth. Samuel and Nancy Gordon GCRC Research Program RFP — Due March 3
The Samuel and Nancy Gordon Research Program is an endowed research fund to support studies broadly related to regenerative medicine with a particular interest in supporting work related to hematopoietic cells and immunotherapy. Applications broadly related to stem cell research will be accepted. Accepting applications for seed grants up to $40,000 each. A maximum of two awards will be made this round. Applications due by 5:00 PM ET on March 3.

ENPRC Pilot Research Program – Due March 7
Emory National Primate Research Center (ENPRC) is seeking proposals for its 2025 Pilot Research Program. Awards provide up to $70,000 in direct costs for one or two years to support innovative research involving non-human primates. Early career investigators, external researchers, and those new to NHP research are encouraged to apply. Proposals must be submitted by 5 PM EST on March 7.

Georgia Cystic Fibrosis Core Center P30 Pilot & Feasibility (P&F) ProgramRFA – LOI Due March 10
The Georgia Cystic Fibrosis Core Center is accepting Letters of Intent for its P30 Pilot & Feasibility Program, supporting research on cystic fibrosis disease pathogenesis and intervention. Two projects will be awarded $50,000 in direct costs for up to two years. Eligible applicants must hold an independent faculty appointment at Emory, Georgia Tech, MSM, Georgia State, UGA, or Augusta University. Priority will be given to junior faculty, established scientists new to CF research, and experienced CF investigators proposing innovative ideas. Learn More.

Georgia CTSA’s Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) program is accepting proposals for pilot grants of up to $20,000 to support innovative methodological research in clinical and translational science. Awards Supporting Cutting-Edge Technologies for Translational Science (ASCETTS) – Due June 19
NCATS invites applications for the Awards Supporting Cutting-Edge Technologies for Translational Science (ASCETTS) NOFO to foster investigator-initiated development of highly innovative technologies to address barriers, limitations, or bottlenecks in translational science – particularly for therapeutic development. This program will support the early-stage proof of concept, high-risk and potentially high-reward studies for feasibility and exploratory technology development, which can transform or significantly improve the efficiency of therapeutic development to achieve NCATS ultimate goals - more treatments to all people more quickly. The research proposed should be for the development of technology that can break new ground or extend present technology toward new directions or novel applications.

The Research Education Core at the Georgia CTSA is offering the Influential Mentoring Training Series, a monthly, hour-long interactive Zoom series for FACULTY ONLY from 12:00 – 1:00 PM on February 19, March 5, April 2. Led by Dr. Dawn Comeau, this series focuses on enhancing equitable mentorship for diverse trainees. Topics include assessing mentees’ understanding, using coaching approaches, evaluating mentorship, and adopting five practices for success. View Flyer.

The TL1 Program provides innovative didactic and mentored clinical and translational research (CTR) training to individuals interested in careers that encompass CTR and clinical and translational science (CTS). The program supports predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees (medical, PharmD, PhD students; resident, fellow physicians; PhD postdocs; and PharmD residents).
