Highlights from BERD Forum 2025 - Explores Research Beyond the Individual
The 2025 BERD Forum , hosted by the Georgia CTSA BERD program at UGA, brought researchers together to explore health beyond the individual. Sessions highlighted social networks, spatial exposures, and strengths-based methods. Attendees praised the forum for fostering collaboration and sharing innovative approaches in translational science.

Georgia CTSA AI Regulation Blog Post: Strengths and Vulnerabilities of the European Union’s AI Act – Part II
In June 2024, the European Union implemented the EU AI Act, becoming the first to adopt a comprehensive AI framework based on ethical principles “to ensure better conditions for the development and use of this innovative technology”. But while the purpose is to advance AI innovation and safety, many question whether the Act’s requirements will prove more cumbersome and costly than they’re worth. POCTRN Innovation Awards — Due June 6
Do you have a groundbreaking point-of-care technology ready for further development? The Point-of-Care Technology Research Network (POCTRN)) is pleased to announce six new innovation award opportunities from its centers. We are currently seeking applications from academic and industry applicants who have innovative point-of-care technologies in areas of chronic disease, infectious disease and disease prevention, such as cancer detection, heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders, STIs, emerging infectious disease in low-resource settings, and more. Awards up to $150,000, may also receive 12 months of in-kind support services.

Emory SOM P4 Fast Track Awards – Ongoing
Emory SOM in partnership with Winship, CHOA, Grady, and CFAR, invites applications for the P4 (Pivot, Proposal, and Planning Program) Fast Track Awards—a new funding mechanism supporting SOM faculty whose grants were recently terminated due to federal funding shifts. Awards of up to $100,000 (direct costs) are available for one year, with potential for renewal. Eligible PIs must propose a novel research pivot aligned with NIH priorities and have ≤$200K in other direct funding. Learn More.

NCATS invites applications for the Awards Supporting Cutting-Edge Technologies for Translational Science (ASCETTS) NOFO to foster investigator-initiated development of highly innovative technologies to address barriers, limitations, or bottlenecks in translational science – particularly for therapeutic development. The research proposed should be for the development of technology that can break new ground or extend present technology toward new directions or novel applications.

The Certificate Program in Translational Science (CPTS) is a formal 16-credit Emory Laney Graduate School program for trainees who seek to conduct research at interface between basic and translational science and clinical medicine. The CPTS enhances and transforms translational research training for predoctoral PhD students, postdoctoral fellows (PhD or MD) & junior faculty at Emory, MSM, Georgia Tech & UGA.

Qual Works: Qualitative Research Workshops — May
Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health is offering online workshops in Qualitative Research Methods (May 12-16) and Qualitative Data Analysis (May 19-23), each priced at $950 (students: $700). Mentored sessions are also available on May 21 and May 28 for $400 each. These workshops are ideal for individuals involved in qualitative research design, data collection, analysis, or supervision.

Summer Institute in Statistics and Modeling in Infectious Diseases (SISMID) offers both online (July 7-11) and in-person (July 14-30 at Emory) modules. Your Fantastic Mind, Emory Brain Health’s award-winning TV series, is back with Season 6 airing Mondays at 9 PM ET and Wednesdays at 7 PM ET on GPB through May 21.
