The FDA approved the SAPIEN transfemoral transcatheter heart valve for severe aortic stenosis. Robert Guyton and Vinod Thourani (cardiothoracic surgery) were the local surgical co-principal investigators in a multicenter trial that led to the approval of the Edwards Lifesciences valve. Thourani's start-up company, Apica Cardiovascular, recently received corporate investment to advance development of a device that will simplify the technique for opening and closing the beating heart during surgery and help minimize bleeding and the heart's exposure to air.
