ACTSI Investigator Dr. Lawrence Phillips in the News
Lawrence Phillips, MD, ACTSI investigator, professor, Endocrinology Division, Emory University School of Medicine, and serves as medical director for the Clinical Studies Center at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Diabetes is a public health problem of epidemic proportions in the U.S. and around the world. Dr. Phillips’ research is aimed to improve the early diagnosis and management of diabetes and pre-diabetes – to sustain beta cell function and improve the natural history of the disease. In his free time, Dr. Phillips has sung choral music for over 50 years, and met his wife (of 42 years!) through performing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Phillips is the principal investigator of a R21 grant from NIH entitled, Reach, Outcomes, and System Impacts of the VA’s National Weight Loss Program, MOVE. Phillips – Emory and the Atlanta VA Medical Center are participating in a new NIH study comparing the long-term benefits and risks of four widely used type 2 diabetes drugs in combination with the first-line drug metformin.
