ACTSI Investigator Dr. Nawazish Naqvi in the News


Nawazish Naqvi, MD, ACTSI investigator and assistant professor, Cardiology Division, Emory School of Medicine. He discovered that c-kit, the receptor for the cytokine stem cell factor, is required for cardiomyocyte terminal differentiation. A desire to translate his findings led him to explore if inhibition of cardiac c-kit in perinatal life can permanently improve heart function by allowing the heart to grow through hyperplasia. Such approaches may be of use in the therapy of congenital heart diseases. Dr. Naqvi is a co-investigator on an NIH grant exploring the role of chymase, a mast cell protease, in the post-myocardial infarction heart. In his spare time, Dr. Naqvi likes to read and cook for the family and loves gardening.

2011 Emory+Children’s Pediatric Research Center Pilot Award recipient for the Children’s Center for Cardiovascular Biology for the project Cardiac Regeneration as a Novel Treatment for Children with HLHS

Dr. Naqvi received a Scientist Development Grant from the American Heart Association for his project entitled, “Long-term Effects of Preadolescent Nutritional Status on Hearth Growth and Function.”

Dr. Naqvi is a co-principal investigator of a NIH National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute R01 grant entitled “Development of the postnatal heart.”
