Meet Siby, an engaging and resourceful AI assistant to help busy caregivers navigate pediatric SCD care. Developed by the Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance (Georgia CTSA) AppHatchery and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Children’s), Siby can help families quickly find essential information and resources. Available 24/7, Siby provides simple answers about appointments, insurance, and everyday logistics, making healthcare easier to understand and access.

While currently a prototype, Siby is a conversational AI chatbot designed to make navigating care simpler and more accessible for families. Built using OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, Siby provides assistance with non-medical and logistical questions such as transportation, insurance, financial aid, and appointment preparation. Trained on verified Children’s sources, Siby amplifies existing resources by making them easier to find, while offering plain-language explanations for complex processes—all in a friendly, conversational format available on both desktop and mobile devices.

“Siby stems from a prevalent need for easy and on-the-go access to reliable information for busy and overwhelmed caregivers,” says Tulika Banerjee, AppHatchery Lead Product Designer, Emory. “By leveraging new AI capabilities, Siby reduces the time and effort required to locate resources and reflects AppHatchery’s mission of making research and information usable by the general public.”

Developed collaboratively with Beatrice Gee, MD, Emory, and the team at Children’s, Siby showcases how interdisciplinary partnerships drive innovation. “Dr. Gee’s openness and support of new technologies have encouraged us to explore avenues beyond traditional web and mobile apps,” adds Banerjee. The team has shared Siby at multiple venues where the prototype has received strong interest and positive feedback, including educational events for patients and families, professional consortiums, and an upcoming presentation at the American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting.

Caregivers and clinicians who tested Siby described it as “highly informative,” “easy to use,” and “a great addition to the medical team as well as my family.” Early pilot testing confirmed its potential to enhance engagement, streamline resource access, and empower families to feel more confident in managing care.
